Sleep is not a switch. It is a runway. The biggest mistake is waiting until you are exhausted and then trying to force it. A wind down stack creates a series of cues that tell your body it is safe to let go.

A simple stack you can repeat

  • 60 minutes out: dim the lights and shut the bright screens.
  • 30 minutes out: start a low volume soundscape or brown noise.
  • 10 minutes out: slow breathing, a short stretch, or a slow shower.
  • Lights out: keep the sound quiet and steady.

The exact order does not matter as much as the repetition. You are building a pattern. After a week, the pattern does a lot of the work for you.

Why sound helps

Sound masks the little surprises that wake you up and it gives your brain a steady rhythm to settle into. Brown noise is my usual pick for sleep because it is deep and gentle, but pink works too.

Start small. Ten minutes is enough. If you can do that every night, you are already ahead.
