Brainwave labels can make this feel complicated, but you do not need a chart to use sound well. You just need to know how you want to feel in the next 15 minutes.

Quick cheatsheet

  • Delta: deep sleep and recovery. Use it when you want to drift.
  • Theta: drowsy, dreamlike, inward. Great for meditation or creative work.
  • Alpha: calm, alert, balanced. The best all rounder for focus without stress.
  • Beta: active, alert, busy. Helpful for short bursts of problem solving.
  • Gamma: very high engagement. Useful in small doses, not for winding down.

Pick the state, not the number

You are not a robot. Your brain is not locked to exact frequencies. Choose a session based on the feeling you want, not the precise number in the title. The music or ambience around the tone often matters more anyway.

Listen to your body

If a beta track makes you edgy, switch to alpha. If theta makes you sleepy and you still need to work, move up. The feedback loop is you, not an app label.

The best setting is the one you will actually use. Consistency beats perfection every time.
