If you are tired, a long focus session feels impossible. A short one feels doable. That is the whole point of this routine.

The 20 minute structure

  • Minute 0 to 2: settle in. One deep breath, clear the desk, start a gentle alpha or beta track.
  • Minute 2 to 15: single task only. No tabs, no switching. Let the sound hold the pace.
  • Minute 15 to 18: push to finish a small chunk. This is where most people drift, so keep it tight.
  • Minute 18 to 20: note the next step. Close the loop so tomorrow feels lighter.

Why this works

Twenty minutes is long enough to get traction and short enough to avoid dread. The sound is a cue. It tells your brain, "this is the focus window." After a few repeats, the cue gets stronger.

If you want a longer session, stack two 20 minute blocks with a five minute break. Still short enough to be manageable, but long enough to get real work done.
